Here's some random quotes and such on war before I ramble on and on about
it.
"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight
on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the
fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills;we shall never surrender."
-Sir Winston Churchill
"Safeguarding the rights of others is the most noble and beautiful
end of a human being."
-Kahlil Gibran, "The Voice of the Poet"
"Yesterday, December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in infamy,
the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval
and air forces of the Empire of Japan."
-Franklin D. Roosevelt
"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!"
-Emiliano Zapata
"It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than
to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence."
-Mahatma Gandhi
"Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever."
-Napoleon
Now that the part where I type out a bunch of quotes
that are semi-related to the topic that I wish to discuss is over, I can go
on to the blithering part. Yeah, so recently there have been a lot of discussions
regarding France, Iraq, the United Nations, and people stating that it's all
about the oil. But that isn't the issue at hand. The issue at hand is, is
the security of a nation worth protecting?
I think the answer you get would depend on who you ask.
If it is the United States, for example, that is being threatened, would they
wish to defend the US? Of course they would, unless they are completely against
any sort of violence, in which case, their opinions are a little extreme.
I agree that all other methods of diplomacy should be exhausted before violence
is resulted to, but sometimes there is nothing you can do other than strike
back. "It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees,"
afterall. These soldiers of ours are people who want to be where they are.
They joined voluntarily and they are willing to lay down their lives to protect
ours, and wish to keep our country from going out on its knees.
So why would a person go out of their way to protest war,
when doing so insults the armed forces who protect us? "Wait a second,
Mort" I hear you saying, "how would this insult them?" First
of all, why would you call me Mort? Mort has to be about the gayest name I've
ever heard. However, the question still stands. This insults them because
it assumes that they have no will of their own. They joined by their own free
will with the understanding that they may have to go to war in order to protect
the country that they love. Why would somebody do something to insult the
honor of these noble soldiers?
The reason probably lies in a perceived threat to the citizens
of the opposing country. In the case of Iraq, I don't think that is a relevant
concern, since the army of Iraq cannot hold a candle to the bonfire of the
United States. Iraq's missiles cannot even reach their own border, let alone
ours. The only way that they can harm us is through cowardly terrorist attacks
against our civilians. You worry about Iraq's citizens? What about the United
States'? Terrorists have shown a tendency towards slaying citizens, whereas
the US military is capable of making surgical strikes not prone to killing
civilians.
Can somebody please tell me a reason for not protecting
America from Iraq? In the area of WWII and the arguments that "Iraq hasn't attacked America yet," why that's a great argument! Let's wait for a recurrance of Pearl Harbor until we get off of our collective asses! We can call it Pearl Harbor 2: Lost in New York. I can't really understand any of the arguments against.
But anyway, what's up with France? Have they ever won a war? Ever? Going to
war without France is like going to war without your kazoo. Here's a couple pictures
that I've gathered concerning France.
