This is going to be a fairly calm rant, since I'm not feeling very energetic right now. This is about the recent outcropping of movies that were based on extremely popular books (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and to a lesser extent, Terminator 3). All the time I hear people complaining about how the movie wasn't as good as the book. This is an obvious fact. Very rarely, if ever, is a movie better than the book that it was based on. It just doesn't work very well in favor of the movies. However, my complaint is not with the book vs. movie issue as far as quality goes. It is more about how creating a movie to give visual representation to a book is just that, visual representation. And I don't like it. The best part about books is that you can use your imagination (though I'm sure we all know people who could use all the help they can get in the imagination department), and when a book is remade as a movie, it gives a definate visual signature to things that previously were only seen how the reader wanted to see them. This means that elves are now looking Liv Tyler, Hobbits now look like Elisia Woods (or however you spell that), and various other visual manifestations. I want my characters back that look how I want them to look. Email me: tyler@childprogeny.com Sign my guestbook. Back to updates. |
